Add Frame resize option

Updated this week

The Add Frame resize option is one of the resize methods available on the Photo Resize app. This resize option adds extra padding/border (a "frame") around your product photos to match your chosen aspect ratio.

This is especially useful if your product photos come in different shapes or sizes and you want a clean, uniform appearance without cutting off any part of the product.

What the Add Frame option does

The Add Frame option resizes your images by adding padding around your product photo. The original photo remains untouched. Your product won’t be cropped, stretched, or distorted.

Instead, the app simply adds a frame so every image reaches the correct dimensions. This ensures your product catalog looks neat and consistent across your store.

For example, if your image has a dimension of 1200 x 1600 px and your target aspect ratio is square (1:1), the final image will be 1600 x 1600 px. That is, the app will add 200px to the left/side of the image.

💡 Pro tip: You can change the color of the 'padding/border' by clicking the 'pencil' ✏️ icon on the app.

When to use Add Frame

Use Add Frame if:

  • You don’t want to crop or cut off any part of the product

  • Your product is centered in the photo

  • Your images have a solid color or transparent background

  • You want to keep the original look of your photo while still resizing

  • The product is not touching the edge of the image canvas

How Background/Padding Color affects your store

By default, the Add Frame option will add 'white' padding/frame to your product photos. You can change this by clicking the 'pencil' ✏️ icon on the app's Settings page.

This simple yet powerful setting provides you with additional control over how your product photos will look after resizing.

Depending on how your products were taken and your store's theme settings, you can change the color of the padding/frame to match your store's background color or your product photos' original background.

What Add Frame doesn’t do

  • It doesn’t crop the product photo

  • It doesn’t stretch or distort the original image

  • It doesn't change the position or alignment of the product inside the canvas

  • It may not give the best results if:

    • The product touches the edges of the image

    • The background is cluttered or colored

    • The product is off-center in the photo

Things to keep in mind

There are a few things to keep in mind when you choose Add Frame to resize your product photos.

Visual balance - products may look smaller

Your products may look 'smaller' compared to using Cropping. As seen in the photo above, the added 'padding/frame' creates an illusion of 'squeezing' the actual product within the frame (image canvas).

Aspect ratio mismatch - Very tall or very wide products will have noticeable padding

Depending on the original photo's aspect ratio and the aspect ratio you chose for your image settings, the final output may have very noticeable padding.

In the image above, both images are originally landscape. But since the left image is shorter compared to the image on the right, the padding is bigger to match the target aspect ratio (square, 1:1).

A good rule of thumb is to choose a target aspect ratio that is closest to your original product photos' aspect ratio.

File size

Padding increases the overall image dimensions and file size because of the added 'frame'. If the image optimization in your store is disabled, just take note that it could affect the overall file size of your images.

Tips for best results

  • Keep your product centered in the photo

  • Leave some margin or space around the subject

  • Use a clean, neutral background (preferably white or transparent)

  • Avoid uploading photos that already fill the entire image edge-to-edge

How to enable Add Frame option

  1. Go to your Resize Settings in the app

  2. Select Add Frame as your resize option

  3. Choose your target aspect ratio

    1. For additional settings, click the 'pencil ✏️ ' icon

    2. Choose max height/width (leave as is to keep original dimensions intact)

    3. Choose background color to match your store's style

  4. Save your changes

That's it! All resized images will now include the Add Frame setting.
