Overview
The AI Extend resize option uses advanced AI technology to resize your photo naturally to fit your aspect ratios — without cropping or adding solid frames.
It’s perfect for product images where you want to keep the full subject visible while making the image fit your store’s display requirements.
Unlike Cropping or Add Frame, AI Extend intelligently recreates missing parts of the background, making the image look like it was always meant to be that size.
Note: Because it uses AI, this feature is designed for high-value product images (e.g. hero images or lifestyle photos) — where every detail counts.
How AI Extend works
Photo Resize's AI Extend feature uses Generative Fill AI to resize your product photos seamlessly. It works by recreating the 'missing parts' of your image to match your image settings.
Think of it as 'Add Frame' resize option, but instead of adding solid borders/frame, it recreates that missing section. Unlike 'Add Frame' or 'Cropping', AI Extend resizes one image at a time. This feature was built for high-value product photos, such as your hero images or lifestyle photos.
How to use AI Extend
1. From your app’s sidebar, click AI Extend. This will open the AI Extend page, where you can resize your product photos.
2. Choose the product image you want to resize.
You can filter the AI Extend section to find the image you want to resize via AI Extend.
You can also click the image table (left side) or the arrows to navigate and find the image you wish to work on.
3. Click AI Extend button to start processing.
Once you find the image you want to resize via AI Extend, click the 'Extend' button, which you can find at the bottom of the main preview images
Each AI Extend generation consumes one (1) AI Extend credit.
4. Wait until the app finishes processing your photo. You can navigate away from the page and process other images while the app finishes generating the image.
5. Once finished, a preview will appear on the right side.
Click the 'Set to current' button to replace and update the image on your store.
Or click the 'Extend' button to create a new version (uses another credit).
Each new generation produces slightly different results because the AI recreates only the part of the image that requires 'filling'.
When to use AI Extend
Use AI Extend to resize your images without losing any part of the product or adding solid borders.
It’s ideal for:
Hero or lifestyle product photos.
Product photos with tight crops that can’t be resized normally
Images shot in uncommon ratios that don’t fit Shopify’s display formats
Avoid using AI Extend for bulk catalog resizing — it’s best reserved for high-impact photos where visual quality matters most.
If you need to adjust many images quickly, use the regular Cropping or Add Frame options instead.
Image limits and requirements
To ensure smooth processing and high-quality results, AI Extend follows a few technical limits and requirements:
Image Size Limit
Maximum supported dimension: 2,048 pixels on the longest side.
If your original image exceeds this limit, the app will automatically downsize it.
This ensures consistent results and faster processing times.
Image Quality
Avoid low-resolution or heavily compressed images — AI Extend performs best with clear, detailed images. The clearer the details, the easier it is for AI Extend to recreate the missing parts.
Aspect Ratios
Works with your store’s existing Photo Resize image settings (e.g., 1:1, 2:3, 4:3), ensuring a consistent image ratio across all your product photos.
The app automatically adjusts padding and output dimensions to match your selected ratio.
Understanding the Results
Once AI Extend finishes processing your image, you’ll see a preview of the new version alongside your original image. Here’s what to know about what you’re seeing:
What the “Current” Badge Means
The Current badge appears on the image that’s currently live on your Shopify store.
Once you click Apply Changes, your AI-extended image replaces the previous one, and the badge updates automatically.
This helps you easily identify which version of your image is being displayed in your store.
Preview vs. Original Image Comparison
The Preview section shows both your original image and the AI-extended result side by side (as thumbnails).
You can click each thumbnail to switch views and compare how the image has been extended.
The extended version will feature a naturally filled background that matches your product’s original lighting and tone.
Regenerating a New Version
You can generate another version by clicking Generate Again.
Each regeneration uses one additional AI credit.
Because AI Extend recreates parts of the image from scratch, results will differ slightly each time.
Common Differences Between Generations
Minor background variations—patterns, shadows, or textures — may appear slightly different.
Edge blending – sometimes smoother or sharper, depending on the image composition.
Lighting balance – small changes in tone or brightness may occur.
This variation is normal and part of how generative AI creates natural-looking results. If you prefer a specific version, simply click the 'Apply Changes' button to save it as your live product image.
Managing AI Extend credits
Each AI Extend generation consumes 1 AI Extend credit.
Included AI Extend credits by plan:
Pay-as-you-go / Basic – no free credits (can purchase add-on packs)
Pro – 25 AI Extend credits included
Unli – 75 AI Extend credits included
The AI Extend credit inclusion refreshes monthly, alongside your regular image credits. This is based on your Shopify account's billing cycle.
If you run out of credits, a pop-up will prompt you to buy more credits. You can check your remaining credits at any time in the top section of the app.

AI Extend usually takes around a few seconds per image, but it can take longer if:
Your image is large or has a complex background
There’s high server demand during peak usage
Your internet connection is slow
You can safely navigate away from the page while your image is processing — it will continue in the background, and your result will appear once it’s done.

In rare cases, this may take a few minutes to update in the app. If there is still no image generated, please contact us so we can look into this for you.

Each time you click Generate Again, the AI creates a new, unique version of your image.
Because it uses generative technology, it “imagines” the missing parts — so the background, lighting, or shadows may vary only slightly between results.
This ensures your extended image looks natural and not duplicated.

AI Extend is meant for special or high-value images where precision matters — like hero photos, featured products, or ad images.
You can technically click the AI Extend button simultaneously. However, unlike the regular resize options, this feature doesn't have a 'bulk processing' system. You will have to manually click the 'AI Extend' button per image.
